Melissa’s Action Plan for Week of May 8

Monday

Issue: Fund Colorado Parks and Wildlife (House Bill 17-1321 — Parks And Wildlife Financial Sustainability)  This bill allows Colorado Parks to set their fees so that they are self-sustaining. This bill passed the House 42 to 22 but is stuck in committee in the Senate.

Action: Click this link to send a message to your CO Senator through Conservation Colorado

And/or call your CO Senator and ask him/her to co-sponsor the bill and move it to the floor of the Senate for a vote.  Details

SAVE THE BEES

Issue: Bees are vital to food production but are increasingly under threat.

Action: Go to Environment Colorado’s No Bees, No Food page and sign the petition. Make a donation if you can.

Details:  Neonicotinoids are the most commonly used class of pesticides in the U.S. They’re 6,000 times more toxic than DDT 1 — and they’ve been linked to massive bee die-offs.2  Bees pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that provide 90 percent of the world’s food. Bees are much more important to food production than pesticides. More than 40% of invertebrate pollinators are facing extinction3  — including eight bee species that have already been added to the endangered species list. Neonicotinoid use has been linked to a 50 percent drop in honeybee populations in the U.S. and the U.K. over the past 25 years.4

Wednesday

Issue: HEALTH CARE  Summary from the Washington Post of what is wrong with the health care bill just passed by the House.

Action 1: Call your Representative and give praise if s/he voted against the AHCA bill and censure if s/he voted for it.

Click this link to see how your Representative voted.

Action 2: Call your senators to advocate for the kind of healthcare you want. Prepare a list of specific things to ask for. The Washington Post article linked above will give you a good start.

Script: I’m a constituent from _ZIP_ and am aware the Senate will soon be editing the AHCA bill. I am happy for my tax dollar to support healthcare for myself and all Americans. Specifically, I want 1) affordable health care for all, 2) no penalty for age or pre-existing conditions, 3) subsidies for those in need, 4) NO subsidies for the wealthy, 5) continuation of Medicaid.

Thursday

Issue: The EPA is soliciting public comment on repealing EPA regulations until May 15, 2017

Action: Visit Regulations.gov.  Click the dark blue “Comment Now!” button, upper right.

Script: I am calling from __ZIP___ to ask the EPA to continue protecting our air and water quality by regulating emissions, testing pesticides, and preventing harmful run-off into our waterways. I deplore Trump’s proposal to cut funding for the EPA because it’s work is vital to maintaining our health and quality of life.
