Melissa’s Action Plan for Week of May 1

[Note: JAN member Melissa has been providing us weekly action plans for several months, so we are giving her a byline!]

May 1 – 5: This week is front-loaded. Do a lot the first two days because these are time-sensitive actions.

Monday, May 1

Join May Day actions to support and protect immigrants.

Call your MoC’s and protest the recent detention of Arturo Hernandez Garcia, who sought sanctuary at the First Unitarian Society in Denver. He has been arrested by ICE and separated from his family.  Send a donation to the First Unitarian Society in Denver that provides sanctuary for people like Hernandez Garcia. or the Metro Denver Sanctuary Coalition. See source.

The Washington Post reports that immigration arrests rose 32.6 percent in the first weeks of Trump’s administration, with newly empowered federal agents intensifying their pursuit of not just undocumented immigrants with criminal records, but also thousands of illegal immigrants who have been otherwise law-abiding.

Issue: Support Colorado HB 1336 “Additional Protections Forced Pooling Order”

Status: Passed House Wednesday, April 26 and now heads to the Senate (Denver Post).  Biz Journals Article

Background: Right now, if one person in an area agrees to the terms, oil and gas companies can force everyone in that area into the pool that allows drilling. There is very little notice and the language is extremely dense legalese. This bill would force companies to explain the terms in plain English, give people more time to make a decision, and require more people to sign on before the rest can be forcibly pooled.

Actions:

The State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee will consider the bill on Wednesday, May 3 at 1:30. Call them, tell them you support HB 1336 “Additional Protections Forced Pooling Order” and ask them to send it on to the Senate floor. Members are: Vicki Marble 303-866-4876, Jerry Sonnenberg 303-866-6360, Lois Court 303-866-4861, Stephen Fenberg 303-866-4872, Owen Hill 303-866-2737.

Ask your Colorado Senator to co-sponsor HB 1336 “Additional Protections Forced Pooling Order” to offer additional protections to property owners.

Call or email the co-sponsors Reps. Dave Young and Mike Foote to thank them for making a start to protect property owners against runaway oil and gas drilling in Colorado.  Also Senate co-sponsors Matt Jones and Irene Aguilar.

Wed-Fri, May 3-5

If you still have energy, go to Jen Hoffman’s Action Checklist for American’s with Conscience and pick a few issues.   Here are some examples.

Action: Advocate for a special commission to investigate 45-Russia ties.  Newly-confirmed Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein can approve a special prosecutor or commission, but has previously hedged on this action. Speak up.

Call: Dept. of Justice comment line 202-353-1555 Postcard: USDoJ, 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20530-0001

Script: I am among the 58% of Americans who want an independent commission to investigate Trump-Russia ties. Trust in the four current investigations is compromised, and the Attorney General’s credibility is tarnished. Only an independent commission or special prosecutor will restore confidence.

Action: Oppose 45 running his business at taxpayer expense.

Call: Your 3 MoCs (lookup). Blue or red.

Script: Hi. I’m a constituent from _ZIP_, calling because I want to know why I my hard-earned tax money is sending Trump to Florida to play golf, paying for his kids’ security while they fly around the world to make him money, and funding Secret Service members staying in Trump’s hotels? This is not normal. It’s corruption. I’d like to know what _NAME_ is doing about it.

Bonus: Install the Don’t Pay Trump Chrome extension.
